After the bushfires, bees need new homes.
Can you help build them?

Join Cobargo local Adrian Iodice (Beekeeping Naturally) and international expert Michael Verspuij (BoomtreeBees, Ireland) for the the first Loghive Building Workshop ever run in Australia!

What you’ll be doing

Before the workshop, our team will take 1m logs from fallen trees and hollow them out with a chainsaw*. Then at the workshop, you’ll finish the work using a gouge — and add a few more features specifically for European honeybees.** Later, we’ll place the new loghives on the edge of burnt-out areas. Come next spring, the bees can swarm in and use them.

How does this help native species?

Building new loghives means other hollowed-out logs are available for native parrots, sugargliders, goannas and possums to move in. This work is essential for allowing our native species to return to their habitat and thrive again — as they won’t have to compete with the honeybees for a new home.

Who can come?

Anyone interested in rehabilitating bushfire-affected areas, learning about bees and learning new skills! Limited to 10 people, kids over 12 can attend for free.

How else can I help?

For $300, you can purchase one of the loghives (1m x 0.6m) for your bushfire-affected property. All remaining hives will be distributed around the Bega area to rehabilitate local bee populations.

We are about to launch a crowdfunding campaign to promote — and fund — this rehabilitation work for bees (and other pollinators) in fire-affected areas along the NSW South Coast. Until the campaign is live, this workshop is the best way you can support our work!
